UDI Response to New Provincial Housing Statistics
Today, BC’s Minister of Finance said there is “room for improvement” when it comes to housing starts, which supports the government’s initiative to improve affordability through supply.
As BC’s largest organization representing the development industry, Urban Development Institute applauds the BC government for studying the issue and releasing data that should compel municipalities to remove barriers to housing affordability. UDI is urging municipalities to consider immediate steps to change zoning bylaws and land use regulations, and improve development approval times in order to deliver homes at a time they are much needed.
UDI agrees with the Province of British Columbia that increased supply is the most crucial way to address housing affordability and continue to grow BC’s economy. UDI is ready to work with all three levels of government and other stakeholders to bring stability back to the housing market.
