Grandview-Woodlands Draft Community Plan
The City of Vancouver has unveiled a new draft community plan for the Grandview Woodlands neighbourhood. The plan, which is a result of extensive community consultation, provides a vision for the area for the next 30 years.
Key priorities of the plan are to manage growth and provide a diverse range of new residential and commercial spaces, while protecting the history and character of the neighborhood.
The area that will undergo the most dramatic revitalization will be the Commercial-Broadway SkyTrain station precinct. The current Safeway site will become a new civic plaza with buildings ranging from 12-24 storeys. The Urban Development Institute is a big proponent of transit-oriented development and we look forward to seeing more homes, offices, and retail opportunities adjacent to this important rapid transit hub.
Overall the plan proposes very modest density increases throughout the community to accommodate new residents. The plan is scheduled to go to Council for final approval at the end of July, 2016. Once approved, it is important that Planners quickly begin implementation through real zoning changes. Growth in this neighbourhood has been stalled for years and it is time to start bringing the new vision to reality.
